also saying this because deviantart is boring and i am bored
Hey Sonikku, I barely know you at all so I'm going to ask you all my obnoxious questions about SMW hacking even though I could easily start a topic at SMWC. Is that cool?
there's a few tools to do that, I think one of them is Carol(The creator of Brutal Mario)'s addmusic, but Romi/MiOr(The guy who created Mario Fantasy)'s version is much better imo. MiOr's addmusic also allows the person using it to add custom sound effects, but I haven't figured out how to make them yet.
MiOr is also amazing at almost everything, he remade sprite tool to be able to use Xkas, he also made a bunch of other stuff. he has a website where he has some of his custom sprites and tools and such, if you want I can give you the url. also Carol made an overworld sprite tool thing, so you can get rid of the original overworld sprites in favor of new ones that people have made, so I'm thinking of learning how to use them, and possibly make them depending if they're anything like blocks
the cool thing is that mior and carol occasionally come to smwncentral and release new things.
URLs are nice. I'm assuming I can at least get some of these tools at smwc. I just started working on a new project so it makes perfect sense for me to learn a few new tools, although the free space finder continues to vex me. I'm not sure if it's the program, my computer, or I'm just an idiot.
And I dislike the freespace finder thing. It confuses me, I prefer the old fashioned Hex Editor and Lunar Address method. I'm not even a old hacker and I don't like all of these new or "improved" things. I mean, I'm used to Blocktool Super Delux, Xkas and such, but some of the other tools just.. Confuse me.
But if you plan to use MiOr's sprites, make sure you read what he said on his website, how you have to apply some GetDrawInfo patch and such to make them not crash your game or something.
And learning ASM is actually pretty fun once you know what commands do what, and important RAM addresses and subroutines. I mean, people say ASM is hard and isn't very fun, but honestly it's the exact opposite. Although, I seem to be confusing myself trying to learn how the original game creators created the RAM addresses to move Mario and displaying poses for every movement and such, but I keep contradicting every theory I think of.
the only thing I can't do with the whole xkas thing is free space. I pretty much gave up on Super Cool World because of it. That and I ran out of ideas.
I feel like I should learn ASM at some point. It's clearly useful knowledge to have when hacking.
I wouldn't think it is a good idea, mostly because if you're like me, you'll get confused a lot by working on the two, like thinking you're missing a GFX/ExGFX file or something. Although, if you feel you can work on two hacks at once, go ahead.
